DAWN UPSHAW ANNOUNCEMENT

The Ohio State University School of Music and Columbus Symphony regret to announce that illness has forced soprano Dawn Upshaw to cancel her appearances with the Columbus Symphony in concerts Friday, Feb 1, and Saturday, Feb 2 at the Ohio Theatre, along with the masterclass scheduled for Sunday, Feb 3 on the OSU campus.

Soprano Jessica Rivera — who frequently performs music by Golijov — will replace Upshaw in both symphony concerts and for the Sunday masterclass.

The OSU School of Music and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra welcome internationally acclaimed composer Osvaldo Golijov to the Contemporary Music Festival 2008. The two organizations are collaborating for the fifth time for the festival, which will present concerts on campus and downtown Wednesday, Jan 30 to Sunday, Feb 3.

Golijov, 47, has been called “one of the hottest composers on the classical scene today, with a multicultural idiom that connects instantly to a wide range of audiences.” Explains Don Harris, professor and organizer of the festival, “Golijov is the most
in-demand composer in America today, receiving the most prestigious commissions possible, including the Metropolitan Opera. He is composer in residence with the Mostly Mozart Festival and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His compositions are colorful and very accessible, and are full of South American and Yiddish and klezmer influences. Audiences will love to hear his music.”
Golijov grew up in an Eastern European Jewish household in Argentina, and was raised surrounded by chamber music, Jewish liturgical, klezmer music and tango. His volatile and category-defying style has won him several Grammy awards and a MacArthur Fellowship; he has written compositions for major ensembles and institutions throughout the US and Europe. His St Mark’s Passion, premiered in 2000, took the music world by storm. He recently completed a cello concerto for Yo-Yo Ma and the Boston Symphony, and composed the soundtrack for Francis Ford Coppola’s newest film, Youth Without Youth.
