Ten second-year MFA (master’s of fine arts) students in Theatre are recreating the cabaret-style stage shows of turn-of-the-century Germany and France. The entertaining show—Wild Stages: Kabarett MFA—will be performed Thursday, May 1 – Saturday, May 17 in Roy Bowen Theatre on campus.

”The original show is the culmination of a quarter-long research project of European ‘kabarett’ shows from about 1890 until 1933 when Hitler was in power,“explains John Giffin, professor in the Department of Dance who is overseeing the creation and production of the show. “Out of all of the historical songs, sketches, dances, monologues and skits we’ve researched, the students are choosing and creating a show. It’s amazing how pertinent the acts still are today.”

Explains Maureen Ryan, head of the MFA acting program, the show is part of Ohio State’s acting curriculum, which has the unique focus of training actors as creators of new work. The process is a benefit to the students, Giffin adds, because it gives them the experience of forming a show from the ground up. “They are testing their strengths as performers, in a show that is creative at its core, not interpretive. They’re doing it all.”
