OSU’s Department of Dance presents a Resident
and Visiting Artist Dance Concert this month that’s uniquely high-tech.
The performances, Nov 14–17, take place in the EMMA (Experimental
Media and Movement Arts) Lab in the Advanced Computing Center for the
Arts and Design (ACCAD). Creative new works will be spotlighted from
six resident and visiting artists, including OSU’s Candace Feck,
Shawn Hove, Michael Kelly Bruce and Melanie Bales, and visitors Ming-Lung
Yang, Taiwan; and Tania Isaac, Philadelphia.
“The EMMA Lab is a real departure for us compared to a typical
theatre stage, and allows us to approach making our work differently,” says
Bruce, who is coordinating the show. “It offers the chance to use
motion capture, projected video, even a total reconfiguration of space.”
The EMMA Lab was launched in 2005 as a venue to present innovative performance
experiences capitalizing on technology and the distinct spatial design
of the lab. In addition to motion capture, it is equipped with wireless
sensors, optic systems, digital video and audio equipment, innovative
projection screens and theatre lighting.
Guest artist Yang performs a new solo he choreographed and Isaac performs
a solo reflecting on her Afro-Caribbean dance connection. The resident
artist pieces feature faculty and student performers.
