Solo Show Spotlights
Works by Michael Mercil
A solo exhibition featuring work by OSU’s Michael Mercil, associate professor in the Department of Art and recipient of a 2005 Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship, opened in November and continues through Feb 19 at the Columbus Museum of Art. The exhibition—for love or money—fills two of the museum galleries.
Mercil has created a sculptural installation inspired by traditional household articles such as furniture, handmade quilts and patterned wallpaper, and transforms these domestic materials into evocative objects that address both historical and contemporary ideas of nature and the built environment. His elegant environment of handcrafted sculptures and fragmented text reference the transcendentalist philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the Utopian visions of the Shakers, and a variety of other sources.
“I am honored, of course, by the opportunity to mount a solo exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art,” explains Mercil. “It is the first time since my move to Columbus 13 years ago for me to exhibit a relatively complete body of work here. All pieces for this exhibit bear fragments of text from a variety of historical and/or vernacular sources.”
