| Vera J. Blaine Professor and Chair Emerita, Department of Dance VERA J. BLAINE (Chair/Professor Emerita) studied professionally at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, and at the Merce Cunningham Studio. Her choreography has been produced by professional companies including HARRY: dance and other works by Senta Driver, The Bill Evans 2nd Dance Company, the Kinetics Company, and free-lance dance artists in New York, London and Israel. On two different occasions, works of hers were produced at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Great Britain. In 1989, as part of The Ohio State University Dance Company's British Tour, her choreography was seen at "The Place," London. Blaine has collaborated with Karen Bell, Dean of the College of the Arts, on a series of duets exploring administrative and personal issues within a performance context. As an academic leader she is a program evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Dance Commission on Accreditation. She received both her B.S. and M.A. degrees from The Ohio State University. Prior to becoming the department's chairperson, 1983-95, she was Director of University Dance Company for 15 years, as well as a major contributing choreographer of the company. In 1977, she was awarded The Ohio State University Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award, and in 1988, she was the first recipient of the Chairperson's Recognition Award at The Ohio State University. A former president of OhioDance, Blaine received the 1996 OhioDance Award for contributions she has made to the development of dance in the state. In 2006, Vera Baine was a recipient of the University's Distinguished Service Award. As Professor Emerita since 1995, she teaches dance composition part-time in the undergraduate and graduate programs, mentors and coordinates the senior concert, serves as an independent consultant for dance programs in higher education in the U.S. and abroad, and does freelance performance projects.
